Deadpool – Anticiaption of the Anti Hero

With anticipation extremely high, we have finally seen the launch of the Fox movies Deadpool film. With the juggernaut promotion applied by Fox for this film, it’s no surprise that cult favourite character Deadpool has risen in both awareness and popularity. But what are his origins? What are the origins of the other characters in the film, and how does it all tie in to the X-Men movie universe?

Deadpool first appeared in issue 98 of “The New Mutants”, published by Marvel comics in 1991. He is hired by Tolliver to attack Cable (an X-Universe character that Deadpool would later share a classic 50 issue series with) and the New Mutants themselves. After several appearances in other titles such as X-Force, Daredevil, The Avengers and Heroes For Hire, Deadpool was given his own mini-series and from there it grew.

Wade Wilson was a mercenary. He accepted assassination jobs against those whom he felt deserved it. He met and fell in love with a woman called Vanessa Carlysle depicted by Morena Baccharin in the upcoming movie (whom would later on become the Marvel character Copycat). Upon finding out that he was terminally ill with cancer, Wade broke up with Vanessa and was approached by ‘Department K’, a special weapons development branch of the Canadian government. With the promise of curing his cancer if he volunteered as a test subject for the Weapon X program, Wilson was infused with a healing factor similar to, but superior to Wolverines.

His cancer was not cured, as such, more that it was in a constant state of repair due to his healing factor, leaving him horribly scarred in the process. Along with physical damage, it left him with psychological damage. It is this that really sets Deadpool apart from other characters, especially from that time. Deadpool is known for his talkative and witty nature, earning him the nickname “The Merc With A Mouth”. He is also aware that he is a comic book character, and speculation that he will ‘break the fourth wall’ in the movie has been confirmed by actor Ryan Reynolds.

Along with Deadpool, in the movie we can expect to see the character Ajax (played by Ed Skrein) who is the character responsible for the experiment for which Wade volunteers, Weasel who is Wade’s best friend and weapons expert, Blind Al (Wade’s room-mate/prisoner/confidante) and Colossus (a mutant from the X-Men universe with the ability to transform his entire body into steel). Negasonic Teenage Warhead also appears, her origins that she was gifted with telepathy & precognition.

Following Fox’s failed previous attempt at putting Deadpool on the big screen in 2009’s “Wolverine: Origins”, fan expectation is high. The trailers, tv spots, posters and overall promotion seem to indicate that this time, they have nailed the character. Time will tell…
